血液中急性時相反應蛋白顯著增加是發炎，組織損傷或感染的結果，可被用于判斷疾病級數的生物標志物。在不同物種中，急性生物標志物的反應不同。比如：C- 反應蛋白(CRP)在人體中會增加1000倍，而在大鼠中僅增加50%。恰恰相反，alpha-2巨球蛋白在大鼠中會增加100倍，而在人體中不會增加。
