無色或白色針狀或棒狀結晶體，工業或農業品為白色略帶微紅色固體顆粒，有刺鼻性氣味。含氮量約為46.67%。密度1.335g/cm3。熔點132.7℃。溶于水、醇，難溶于乙醚、氯仿。呈弱堿性。尿素能有效的使蛋白質變性，尤其能有效地破壞非共價鍵結合的蛋白質。這特點可以提高某些蛋白質的可溶性，其濃度可達10摩爾/體積。尿素也可用來制造硝酸尿素。
